Gus Johnson will not be calling the NCAA Tournament this year. Johnson was let go by CBS Sports following 2011 NCAA Tournament. After being a play-by-play announcer with CBS Sports for 16 years, the network and Johnson could not agree to a new deal which would keep Johnson on CBS.
Johnson is one of the most animated and over-the-top sports announcers in the world today. He is known primarily for his coverage of college basketball but also covered college football, track and field, boxing, and the 1998 Winter Olympics during his tenure with CBS Sports.
It did not take long for Johnson to find another big time job. Even though he was working for the Big Ten Network while with CBS Sports, he decided that working only for the Big Ten Network was not enough. Johnson quickly reached a deal with FOX Sports Media Group to be the lead play-by-play announcer for its college football coverage.
Now that it’s that famous month of the year where 68 NCAA Division-I college basketball teams are put into a bracket to compete for a national title has arrived, what will this year’s tournament look like without its signature play-by-play guy? Who know! But what we do know it that the tournament this year will not feature a unique, exuberant, and over-the-top play-by-play announcer like Gus Johnson.
